About Cockscombs

Although technically a Celosia, they really deserve a place of their own! Start seeds indoor and cover lightly. Germinate at room temperature for 5-10 days. Transplant as soon as plant can be handleed. Leaving plants potbound will stunt flower growth . Loves heat and sun. Average soil.

Celosia cristata. 18000s/OZ. An elderly friend of my mother-in-law gave me these seeds 22 years ago and told me they had been passed on to her from HER grandmother. I have carefully saved them every year since. I have found no other seed like these anywhere, even from Seed Saver’s Exchange. They are completely unique. These flowers are truly magnificent. These are the old-fashioned cockscombs from years ago. They grow up to three feet tall and have enormous burgundy flower heads that stretch to 12" across. They will also have numerous side shoots that are often three or four inches across. They are a deep ,rich burgundy color and ,when cut, make a stunning everlasting. I have some that are four years old and have matured to a beautiful rose pink color. The leaves are compact, green with a red tinge. The plants require and love sunshine and tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. They love heat and tolerate drought making them ideal for southern gardens. Cool weather makes them tend to early flowering thus almost guaranteeing flowering for northern gardeners as well. This is the flower that started us on our love for heirlooms.
