About Asparagus Crowns- Cultivation
Please note: When purchasing asparagus crowns, there is a flat, one time shipping charge of $3.00 in addition to regular shipping charges regardless of number of asparagus crowns purchased.

Asparagus officinalis. Dig a trench about 12" deep. Apply well composted manure or fertilizer at recommended rate. Place crowns lengthwise in the bottom of the trench. The buds do not have to be facing up. I lay the crowns on their side. Place crowns 10-12" apart. Row spacing should be about 5'. Completely cover crowns with soil but only fill in trench gradually as the crowns sprout and grow. Spears may be harvested the second year until the spears become small, usually 3/8" diameter. Fertilize with manure or fertilizer yearly.

Jersey Knight is world famous for its yield, flavor, performance and dependability. I consider this asparagus to be among the very best in the world and much quicker and more reliable to make a crop than seed. Jersey Knight has the best spear quality and performs better than any other in warmer climates and its cold hardiness is also unsurpassed making it ideal for Northern gardens as well.

I hand select each crown before shipment. These are very healthy and large one year old crowns. You may expect a light harvest the spring after planting and a regular harvest every spring from there on. All crowns have been inspected by the state Dept. of Agriculture and are Fussarium wilt free.

Now accepting orders for Spring 2010 planting. I anticipate starting to ship April 1st, 2010 but this date can change according to the weather. Feel free to email us for additional information or questions.

I have sold and grown these for many years and have always been pleased as have my customers.

Open pollinated variety originating in California and introduced by the USDA in 1949. Medium to large purplish tinged, tightly-budded. Grows well throughout Midwest. This is the asparagus most of us remember from our youth. Planting crowns will give you about a one year jump over starting from seed.

Larger, sweeter and tastier spears than the more common green types. Purple Passion Asparagus stalks turn green when cooked. Contains less lignin than green types so larger spears stay tender longer but overall yields may be less.
