Dig a trench about 12" deep. Apply well composted manure or fertilizer at recommended rate. Place crowns lengthwise in the bottom of the trench. The buds do not have to be facing up. I lay the crowns on their side. Place crowns 10-12" apart. Row spacing should be about 5'. Completely cover crowns with soil but only fill in trench gradually as the crowns sprout and grow. Spears may be harvested the second year until the spears become small, usually 3/8" diameter. Fertilize with manure or fertilizer yearly. | | Return to top |
