Safe Seed Pledge: Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations.
Plant chives directly in the garden as early in spring as the soil can be worked. Seeds can also be planted as late as 2 months before the first fall frost. Although they thrive in any good garden loam, chives show a preference for slightly acid soil and need to be kept moist throughout the growing season. In climates with hot summers, choose a location where they can enjoy some shade during the day.
Divide established clumps of bulbs every third spring, and transplant clusters from the outer edges of the clumps. Alternatively, chives can be raised afresh each year from seed.
Allium tuberosum. Perennial. The flat leaves of garlic chives distinguish them from onion chives as do the white flowers and milder taste. Romanian Gypsies are said to have used them in their fortune telling rites. Chives complement cheese, eggs and salads. We have had the same clump of garlic chives for years.
Allium schoenoprasum. Perennial. Onion chives have been a culinary favorite in the orient for over 3000 years. Their lavender blooms also make them very pretty in the garden. We raise a bowl of them in the kitchen window ready for constant snipping.18000 seeds/Oz.
