Prior to the Civil War, slaves on plantations were generally not permitted to grow the white cotton of their overseers. Brown cotton was the most commonly grown, but green, blue, yellow and pink were also grown. These heirloom cottons are now difficult to find. Because naturally colored cottons are now so rare, we will be searching for these other colors in the coming years.
